Ridgewood Block Party!

RHS HTS visited a local block party to add to autumn festivities! Apart from the dunk tank, bounce houses, and glitter arts, our board offered face painting and tattoos to the youngsters at the booth!

A magic show, performed by our friend and magician, Matt Mandeli, brought many giggles and smiles. Thank you Matt!

Meet our newest baby - TingMeng!

TingMeng's  Anoplasty

Estimated Cost:   $5500

TingMeng is a girl born in southeastern China with a congenital imperforate anus.  This is caused by abnormal development of the fetus and means that TingMeng’s opening is either missing or blocked.  This imperfection can be created via a surgical procedure called an anoplasty.  A temporary colostomy is often preformed first, while tests are taken and the baby is monitored.  Once the medical team is ready, the affected organs are surgically corrected by the anoplasty operation.
Half the Sky is seeking to raise $5500 to cover the costs of TingMeng’s care before, during, and after surgery.  Please help us give TingMeng the chance to live the normal, healthy life she deserves!

Chinese New Year

Happy Chinese New Year!

Chinese New Year was on January 31st, yesterday.  This year was the year of the horse (check the chart to see which animal you are)!

How is Chinese New Year celebrated?
Red envelopes are a huge deal on Chinese New Year.  Kids get money from their parents in red envelopes, traditionally to "put down evil spirits".  They can contain a few dollars to a few hundred dollars.  $8 is a common amount, because the number 8 in China sounds like "wealth" or "smooth".  Parents (or elders) also give children gifts in the form of sweets.  Red is a huge symbol during Chinese New Year because of the myth of the beast Nian, who feared the color red.

We hope everyone has/had a great new year!
